Carlton trained initially as a mechanical engineer and upon completion of these studies he subsequently read for a degree in mathematics. After a period of time in the Royal Naval Scientific Service, where he was concerned with hydrodynamic research, he joined Stone Manganese Marine in 1969. During this time he was involved in the design of marine propellers and bow thrusters as well as undertaking research into propeller off-design performance. As the Senior Surveyor he is now involved in projects mostly related to investigations, problem solving and predictions of marine structure dynamic responses. He is also a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Synopsis The paper considers some topical aspects of noise and vibration in the shipboard environment. In particular, hydrodynamic and other sources of excitation are discussed in relation to their quantification, analysis and the assessment of the ship's response. Within the discussion comfort class rules are considered in relation to their ISO basis and application in the marine industry. Some comment is made concerning noise in relation to the external shipboard environment.

Comparison of Ducted and Non-Ducted Ship Propellers with Constraints Consideration Using Genetic Algorithm

In recent years, in spite of progressing in the ship propulsion system, many problems are required to work in order to gain highest performance. Optimization of propeller system, as the most important and applicable in this type of systems is of special importance. In many vessels, due to their certain conditions design, ducted propeller is used. Genetic algorithm is a powerful method for findi...

Noise and Vibrations on Board Cruise Ships: Are New Standards Effective?

Standards on noise and vibration assessment are continously updated to be at the same time effective and reasonably applicable to ships. In order for the Rules to be of practical use it is imperative that they identify a procedure characterized by a series of prerequisites, that are easily identification of the exciting sources and repeatability of measurements. For defining more reliable asses...

Determining the Hydro-acoustic Characteristics of the Ship Propeller in Uniform and Non-uniform Flow

This research has been carried out to determine the marine propeller hydro-acoustic characteristics by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver in both uniform and non-uniform wake flow at different operating conditions Wake flow can cause changes in pressure fluctuation and gas effect on propeller noise spectrum. Noise is generated by the induced trailing vortex wake and induced pressure ...

The Effects of Noise and Whole Body Vibration on Urinary Metanephrine and Normetanephrine

Background and Aim: Little attention has been paid to the effects of combined exposure to noise and vibration. Exposure to noise and vibration can effect stress hormones and may lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disorders. This study aims to investigate the effects of noise and vibration on urinary Metanephrine and Normetanephrine among men. Methods: In this experimental study, 30 ...

Ships Classification Basing On Acoustic Signatures

The paper presents the technique of artificial neural networks used as classifier of hydroacoustic signatures generated by moving ship. The main task of proposed solution is to classify the objects which made the underwater noises. Firstly, the measurements were carried out dynamically by running ship past stationary hydrophones, mounted on tripods 1 m above the sea bottom. Secondly to identify...
